Other than ensuring sufficient depth at our departure and arrival ports the passage was pretty straightforward. There's a swing bridge at Whitby which operates 2hrs either side of high water (2018) so to avoid a lengthy wait we planned to be leaving Hartlepool at 1045 on the falling tide at which point we would have a depth of 2.7m (1m below our keel). At an average speed of 4kts (allowing for the tide that would be foul until HW Dover +1hr (1600)) the trip should take around 6hrs which put our ETA at 3½hrs before local HW.
After allowing plenty of time for the lock out, departure from Hartlepool was fine with a close watch kept on the leading lights astern and the depth gauge. The trip was uneventful although the ESE gave us a beat for most of the trip. Motor sailing for the last hour or so we arrived at Whitby about 2½hrs before local high water with plenty of depth to get in to the harbour for the short wait until the bridge opened.
The waiting pontoon was very busy with some small boats on the end of the raft so we opted for the Yacht Club pontoon which lies between the waiting pontoon and the swing bridge; no-one seemed to mind.
We called the marina on Ch11 and the Marina Master was waiting to guide us to our berth and catch our ropes. Facilities were good; showers, laundry, diesel by the can and gas available from the chandlers 500m from the marina office. We were charged £23 a night. There's also a large supermarket close by. Whitby is a bustling holiday town with stacks to do.
